Fourth Grade - A Year of Transition

Welcome to 4th grade! This is an exciting year where your fourth grader will learn to be a more responsible and sophisticated learner who can think critically.

Your fourth grader will employ more advanced reading comprehension strategies to understand text, make inferences, and determine importance. 4th graders will compare and contrast texts across different genres. Writers will learn how to write a structured paragraph with topic sentences and details. They will engage in research projects, study Cynthia Rylant and use her as a mentor to write narratives and write exciting nonfiction texts as well as persuasive essays.

In math, fourth graders will develop a deeper understanding of number sense and place value.  They will utilize all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) as they solve multi-digit computations through the millions place.  They will also gain an extensive understanding of fractions and decimals through lessons focusing on equivalence as well as ordering, comparing, adding, and subtracting fractions and decimals. 4th graders will also spend time furthering their understanding of geometry by looking at angle measures and plane figures. Additionally, they work to understand and persevere through multi-step problem solving utilizing all four operations.

The Social Studies curriculum in grade four includes the history and geography of New York State. Students will enjoy engaging in lessons about Native Americans, Colonial Times, The American Revolution, and the formation of our government.

In science, we engage in meaningful hands-on learning to explore topics such as the structures, sense receptors, and behaviors of organisms, and changes to the earth’s surface over time. We also study energy in fourth grade and learn about energy transfer, electricity, and wavelengths.

Fourth grade is an amazing year of growth! We love seeing the progress our students make in all aspects of life!

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is responsible for setting student learning expectations (standards) for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of skilled instruction. Each local school district develops curricula based on these established standards. Read more on the NYSED Standards & Instruction website.
