Mount Pleasant students celebrate Veterans Day

At Columbus, students and staff celebrated with “Take A Vet To School Day” hosting dozens of veterans, many of whom are relatives of our students. Since 2017 Columbus has held the event, organized by CES teacher Christine Galbo. Each year breakfast is served in the cafeteria followed by smaller gatherings in classrooms where students meet with veterans asking questions and hearing stories from their days in the service. The morning ends with a school-wide assembly. This year’s included a performances by select members of the band and chorus, a flag salute by the Boy Scouts, a presentation of Penny Wars donations to a local food bank, 7th grader Mikaela Gerring announced her Girl Scout Silver Award which is focused on recognizing local veterans, and a 104-year old WAVE (Women of the Armed Forces) was honored. New this year, “The White Table” a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty, was set at the front of the room, Many veterans remarked how much that meant to them.
