A New Group is Formed at CES: The Flag Committee
After noticing that the flags in many classrooms and common spaces in the building looked worn, student council members Maibel, Riley Gwendolyn, Ella, Emma, and Delaney formed the flag committee with the goal of making sure no tattered flags were hanging in their school. They also worked with principal Michael Cunzio to coordinate a schoolwide assembly complete with members of the American Legion and an armed forces medley played by the honor band.
At the ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, the girls explained, “Our job as the flag committee is to help the school realize that it is important to fly flags that are in good condition. We are here today to help our school get new and improved flags for our classrooms from now and moving forward. Once we learned about flag day, we decided to do a school wide project. The flag committee has been spending recess taking note of each flag and making a decision if a replacement is needed. We were able to order the necessary amount of flags and even a few extras for future purposes.”
The event was also an awareness raising because the big three summer holidays: Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day get all the attention and Flag Day is frequently overlooked. But not Columbus!
Members of the Valhalla American Legion Post 1038 participated in the ceremony by sharing artifacts related to the flag and demonstrating how to fold the flag properly. They also agreed to take the worn out flags and dispose of them in the proper way. Westlake High School counselor and member of the Sons of the American Legion, Nick DiPaolo, quizzed students on some flag facts and handed out small American flags to those who answered correctly.
We are so proud of these hard-working, patriotic students at Columbus . Please join us in thanking them for taking pride in their school and our flag.
